Coolpad Note 3 Review
Coolpad entered the Indian market with Dazen 1 and Dazen X7 smartphones. Now, after corporate restructuring, the company dropped the Dazen branding and has launched Coolpad Note 3 in India which is packed with a great hardware configuration.
There is a lot of hype around the smartphone. Find out if it lives up to the hype and what we think of this feature packed smartphone.
Design and Build
The design of the phone is nothing great. Also, it is not a let-down. It is just that the company has not put in effort for a unique design. It is rounded and curved on the edges with a chrome-like frame. The display bezels are thin but the display has a black border running around it.
For a lower priced smartphone, one thing that the potential buyer worries is the build quality. While most cheap phones are not well built, this one is. Despite having a 5.5-inch display, the phone seems pretty compact and is fairly easy to operate with one hand.
At the front, the display is protected by a NEG glass which resists scratches. However, the display is prone to fingerprints and smudges. Above the display, there is a 5 MP camera, earpiece and an LED notification light.
Below the display, there are three capacity touch buttons – multi-tasking, home and back. Unfortunately, the buttons are not backlit. The company should have opted for on-screen buttons.
There is a 3.5mm audio jack on the top edge while the bottom edge houses a micro USB port. The power button is at the right edge while there is a volume rocker key on left.
At the back, there is a 13 MP camera at the top-center and a fingerprint scanner below it. At the bottom, there is a Coolpad branding. The material of the back panel feels soft in hands and seems to be of good quality. But, you will need to take care while removing the back panel.
Inside, there are two micro SIM card slots. If you want to use a memory card, you will have to be content with using the single SIM only.
Display: 5.5-inch 1280 x 720 pixels
Processor: 1.3GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753
Internal Storage: 16GB
Camera: 13 MP rear; 5 MP front
OS: Android 5.1.1
Battery: 3,000 mAh
Dimensions: 151 mm x 77 mm x 9.3 mm
Weight: 155 grams
The Coolpad Note 3 has a 5.5-inch display with screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels while other phone in this price range offers full HD resolution. While the resolution is low, it is quite good and sharp.
As the phones comes with an IPS display, the viewing angles are great. Although, the colour appears washed out while watching videos. The display is very bright and vivid. But, the glass is very reflective, which makes it very hard to use the phone exposed to bright sunlight.
Unlike other phones, the touch seems to be over sensitive to me. But, you will get used to it after spending enough time with the phone.
The phone runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system out-of-the-box. Like every other Chinese smartphone, this phone also comes with the company’s own layer of skin on top – Cool UI.
While the UI appears to be lighter on the system, it offers several customization options, including themes, wallpapers, transition effects, etc. The company has included icon pack which are colourful and big in size, which makes the screen look chaotic.
There is an application named ‘FP Lock’ which allows you to lock the applications on the phone which can only be unlocked using the saved fingerprints on the phone.
You can run multiple apps at the same time using the feature called ‘Multitask’. It can be activated by swiping from the top and tapping the multitask button.
The Coolpad Note 3 is powered by a 1.3GHz 64-bit MediaTek MT6753 octa-core processor, along with 3GB of RAM. There is 16GB internal storage, out of which, you get around
The experience while using the phone was pleasant. There were no noticeable lags in the user interface. The apps opened quickly and the multitasking was also smooth. There was no problem while playing casual games.
This is the only smartphone out there under Rs. 10,000 that comes with a fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner on the phone is one of the fastest. It unlocks the phone within a fraction of second. It is also capable of reading fingerprint in 360-degree.
There were no issues while using the fingerprint scanner. We did not encounter any problem while using it.
The call quality was good on the phone. The sound output from the speaker is average. It supports 4G LTE connectivity along with 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. It also supports USB OTG connectivity.
The 3000mAh non-removable battery provided enough power to last the phone for the entire day. However, depending on your use, the battery life will vary.
The phone features a 13 MP camera at the back of the phone, while on the front, there is a 5 MP shooter.
In bright sunlight, the camera performs good. The images taken appears to be natural but seems to have a slightly warm effect. The images had good contrast and colour reproduction.
In low light, the images lack details due to the noise reduction. Also, the areas covered with the shadow were covered in dark.
We were surprised with the decent quality of the images as we were not expecting it to be this good. While using front facing camera, you can use fingerprint scanner to capture image.
The camera performance is average for its price but it is not the best in the price range.
The Coolpad Note 3 is offering the specs and features which are avaialable in the high-end smartphones. It offers a fingerprint scanner, 3 GB of RAM, 3,000mAh battery, all for the price of just Rs. 8,999.
In terms of features, there is no other smartphone in the market similar to Coolpad Note 3, priced under Rs. 10,000.
If you are considering to the buy a smartphone under Rs. 10,000, the Coolpad Note 3 is the one you should go for.
