2014 will soon come to a close. But it has been an exciting year for the global smartphone market. Samsung lost quite a chunk of its dominance, Xiaomi zoomed in to become a Top 5 brand, the iconic Nokia was renamed to Microsoft and lots more.

Apart from all these statistical games, there were hordes of launches. The bigger brands conitnued to launch flagships while new entrants blazed through the market and changed the entire look of the budget smartphones or rather entry level smartphones category.

If you are looking to buy a smartphone, then you have come to the right place. This is the first post of a series of posts where we will list all the best smartphones in the Indian market in different price range categories.

This list will round-off the top entry-level smartphones in the Indian market, launched in 2014. This list features smartphones which are priced below Rs. 10,000.

1. Xiaomi Redmi 1S

xiaomi-redmi-1sRedmi 1S is the first entry level smartphone from the company and as expected, the phone created quite a havoc in the market. The company is offering great specs at dirt-cheap price and giving serious hits to home-grown Micromax and others.

For Rs. 5,999, you get 4.7 inch HD display, 1.6GHz quad core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage with microSD card slot, 8MP primary camera, 2MP front facing camera. The only let down is that it runs on Android 4.3 based MIUI v5, but the company has promised to update it to MIUI 6 soon.

2. Asus Zenfone 5

asus-zenfone-5Asus entered the market with three smartphones and the Zenfone 5 is one of them. Featuring a 5-inch HD display and powered by a 1.6GHz dual core Intel Atom processor with 2 GB RAM and 8 GB ROM, it supports microSD card slot. It has 8MP primary camera and 2MP front snapper. Running on Android 4.3, the phone is getting Android update soon.

Asus priced this device aggressively and as a result, there has been a huge demand of the phone. Costing just Rs. 9,999, this is one of the best piece of hardware you can get for at such rock-bottom price.

3. Huawei Honor Holly

honor-hollyThe Honor Holly comes with a 1.3 GHz quad core processor, 5-inch HD IPS Display, 1 GB RAM with 16 GB ROM. It features 8 MP BSI primary camera and 2 MP front facing camera. It runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat and is powered by a 2,000mAh battery.

Available at Rs. 6,999 via Flipkart, Huawei tried to take advantage of the current emerging market scenario. Though the phone is reasonably priced, it may still lack the firepower to go for the long run

4. Motorola Moto E

moto-eMotorola was quite righly, the first brand which brought about a revolution in India’s entry level smartphone segment. And it’s first weapon was the Moto E. For Rs. 6,999, the company is offering decent hardware. It comes with 4.3 inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 1.2GHz dual core processor, 4 GB ROM, expandable memory support, 5MP primary camera.

The drawback of the device is that it does not come with a front facing camera. But, the advantage is that there are pretty high chance to get the latest Android update before everyone else, on an entry level phone.

5. Android One Devices

google-android-oneThese devices includes Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO Mi-498. All the three phones comes with similar specs – 4.55 inch display, 1.3GHz quad core processor, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB ROM, 5 MP primary camera, 2 MP secondary camera and 1,700mAh battery.

It runs on Android 4.4.4 Kitkat. The devices are launched under Google’s Android One program, meaning, the devices will get the latest Android updates from Google at least for two years. The price of the device starts at Rs. 5,777.

6. Asus Zenfone 4

zenfone-4 This younger sibling to Zenfone 5 comes with 4 inch display, 1.2GHz dual core Intel Atom processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM, 64 GB expandable storage support, 5MP primary camera, VGA front camera and 1,600mAh battery.

The phone is upgradable to Android 4.4 Kitkat and has the company’s own UI on top. The phone is available for Rs. 5,499 via Flipkar and it is immensely popular when it comes to low-budget smartphones.

7. Microsoft Lumia 535

lumia-535Lumia 535 is the first phone to come with a Microsoft branding. It runs on Windows Phone 8.1 OS with Lumia Denim update and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 200 processor along with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB ROM.

It features a 5 MP primary camera and a 5 MP front facing camera. The phone has some touch issues but the company has promised that it will be fixed soon via software update. The phone costs about Rs. 9,000.
